Setting Up Topsites
What you will need: Web host 1 MySQL Database (some webhosts don't give you any so make sure you check before continuing) FTP (and basic knowledge of it) 1. Before we begin, you will need to download all the files required for topsites. Aardvark is pretty popular and it is what I use. Click here to download it. 2. Now Unzip the file and I suggest you rename the folder to topsites just so you know what it is in the future. Upload the entire file to your web host using FTP. It may take awhile just so you know. 3. While you wait for the insane amount of files to upload you can start setting up your MySQL Database. Go to your web host control panel. Freehostia users: log in, go to website manager, then database manager. You should get a page that looks something like this: ![]() The blurred out part is just my freehostia username so don't worry about that. To create a new database pick a name and password. 4. I will name mine topsite. Click Create Database and you should see something like this: ![]() NOTE: In freehostia, your username and database name are the same thing. For other hosts they are usually different. 5. Uploading done and Database created? Great. CHMOD the file called settings_sql.php to 666. If you don't know how to do it try right clicking the file and you should see chmod somewhere. 6. It's finally time to install the topsites. To get to the install page use "yoururl.com/topsites/install/index.php" Since I am using freehostia it would be tempting-illusions.freehostia.com/topsites/install/index.php 7. You should come to a page that asks you to choose a language. Choose english then click ok to go to the next page. This is where you enter most of your information. General settings are pretty self explanatory. The MySQL settings should be pretty simple. If you don't know what to put in a space go to the page where you set up your database, all the information will be there. After that click Install. ![]() 8. Now you should come to a screen that says installation complete. Delete this directory. Go to your ftp program and delete the whole install directory. Go back to the topsite root directory and chmod the settings_sql.php file to 644 9. You have now isntalled Aardvark topsites! To access the admin panel go to yoururl.com/topsites/index.php?a=admin |
